First Friday November 6, 2009
............Meet The Artists
5:30 - 8:30 pm at the
Museum
On First Friday,
November 6, 2009, the Phelps Mansion Museum presents Convergence &
Flow, the latest solo exhibition of fine art photographer
JW Johnston.
The show is an eclectic collection of the Whitney Point
photographer’s work: film and digital, color and black & white, large
prints and small, intimate and sweeping, abstract and representational.
The work is varied, but has a common theme: the convergence of
dissimilar but compatible elements such as color, tone and texture.
“It seems my most successful images occur when I am completely
absorbed by the scene I have found and the task of photographing it,”
Johnston says. “Self-consciousness is gone. Time flies. There is a
feeling of transcendence, a sense of flow.”
Johnston’s work is in a growing number of private and
institutional collections from Florida to New York. His work has been
exhibited in several Washington, DC, and Greater Binghamton galleries.
Johnston’s most recent solo exhibition was last year at Orazio Salati
Studio and Gallery in Binghamton, where he also maintains an ongoing
presence in Gallery II.
Johnston teaches photography and design at Broome Community
College. He conducts independent personal and group workshops through
the Big Tent Cultural Center in Whitney Point. And he recently
announced he is accepting commissions. His website is
www.jwjohnston.com.
The public is invited to see Convergence and Flow, meet
the artist, and enjoy the free refreshments during a reception from 5:30
to 8:30PM during First Friday, November 6th.
Johnston has announced that he will donate a portion of the
proceeds from his sales during this show to the Phelps Mansion Museum.
