CHANGING NEWS MEDIA

A encore program at the Phelps Mansion Museum, Monday March 8th at 7:00PM will be presented on the Changing News Media from the perspective of Steve Craig, former News Channel 34  and Fox 40 managing editor.   The news media landscape has been drastically re-formed in the first decade of the 21st century from the latter half of the 20th century domination.  The fragmentation of mass audiences, the explosive growth of the internet and broadcast de-regulation are some of the forces that have changed both the news in the printed form delivered to you and the news that one sees on TV.  Many daily local newspapers and local television news programs are among the casualties, and those still surviving are doing so in a weakened fashion.

Steve will trace the development of local television news from it's debut in the 1950's as a loss-leader for stations, to it's development into a profit center in the 1980's and 1990's, to the present day, when new information technologies and altered viewing habits have eroded both audiences and advertising revenue.  Steve will raise possibilities for new options for local news delivery.
